At Ito Packing Company, Food Safety is a high priority. We feel a special obligation to our customers, consumers and the market as a whole to protect our fruit and protect the public. Much of our reputation comes from the manner in which we address rising food safety concerns around the world. We define success by customer satisfaction and confidence in our products. Increasingly, Food Safety is an eminent concern of the grape and tree fruit industry.
Also, healthful eating is becoming a greater priority the world over. In addition, consuming a diet rich in a variety of fruits and vegetables is gaining more and more attention in the U.S. According to USDA research, per capita consumption of fresh produce continues to rise. Many factors need to be taken into consideration to ensure consumer confidence in fresh produce safety. We have tailored our food safety practices to encompass the diverse commodities that we produce and market. The major source of microbial contamination, though rare, is Escherichea coli. That small possibility has been made even smaller by our continual handling improvements.
We have made further leaps and bounds in order to minimize microbial food safety hazards at all levels of our operation – field, picking, packing, storage and shipping. We continue to improve our personnel programs, building and equipment considerations, sanitation operations, production and process controls, documentation and records,
trace back and recall. As proof of our continued commitment and progress in these areas, we have obtained a 95% rating from Primus, a widely recognized, third-party, food safety program developer.
Even though our industry has never experienced a food born illness outbreak, we are continuing to be very proactive. We believe that we hold our fate in our own hands when it comes to avoiding any outbreaks. Due diligence is our answer to consumer concerns. Our Food Safety program will continue to be founded on sound scientific principals and practices. We must do this to increase customer confidence. |
